What is the best cloud monitoring tool?
There is no single best cloud monitoring tool, because the platforms differ most in how they bill you rather than in what they can see. Datadog carries the broadest catalogue of integrations and bills per host with separate charges per product, so costs compound once you enable APM, logs and RUM together. Dynatrace instruments a host automatically through its OneAgent and analyses dependencies with its Davis AI engine, and it is usually the most expensive to start. New Relic bills on data ingested instead of per host, and its free tier includes 100 GB per month plus one full platform user. Prometheus paired with Grafana remains the standard open-source stack for cloud-native and Kubernetes estates. Better Stack combines logs, metrics, uptime and incident management on one platform and targets mid-sized engineering teams. What is a cloud monitoring system?
A cloud monitoring system collects telemetry from cloud infrastructure and turns it into alerts a team can act on. It gathers three kinds of signal: metrics, which are numeric measurements sampled over time such as CPU, memory, request rate and latency; logs, which are timestamped records of individual events; and traces, which follow one request across every service it touches. The system stores that data, evaluates it against thresholds or learned baselines, and notifies whoever is on call when something breaches. What separates it from traditional server monitoring is that cloud resources are ephemeral, so it has to discover new instances, containers and serverless functions on its own rather than being pointed at a fixed list of hosts.
What are the tools used for monitoring clouds?
Cloud monitoring tools fall into three groups. The provider-native services are AWS CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, and Cloud Monitoring inside Google Cloud Observability, which was previously branded Stackdriver and then Google Cloud Operations. The third-party platforms include Datadog, New Relic, Dynatrace, Splunk Observability Cloud, and Better Stack, and these are what most teams use for visibility across more than one cloud. The open-source options include Prometheus for metrics, Grafana for dashboards and visualization, Zabbix for infrastructure monitoring, and Nagios for network monitoring. All three groups collect metrics, logs, traces, and performance data from cloud infrastructure, and most teams end up running a provider-native service alongside one third-party or open-source platform.
What is the difference between cloud monitoring and CloudWatch?
CloudWatch is one specific product; cloud monitoring is the category it belongs to. Amazon CloudWatch is the monitoring service built into AWS, and it sees AWS resources such as EC2, S3, Lambda and RDS natively, with no agent required for basic metrics and no separate contract. Cloud monitoring describes the wider practice of watching infrastructure wherever it runs, across more than one provider and often alongside on-premises hardware. The difference becomes practical the moment you run anything outside AWS, because CloudWatch cannot see it. At that point teams either add each provider's own service, meaning Azure Monitor and Google Cloud Monitoring, or run a single third-party platform across everything and accept the extra cost for one consistent view.
What is the cloud monitoring API?
A cloud monitoring API is the programmatic interface to a monitoring platform, used in place of its web console. How to do API monitoring?
API monitoring means running scheduled requests against your endpoints and alerting when a response is wrong, slow or missing. Start by listing the endpoints that actually matter, which is usually authentication, checkout or payment, and anything a partner integrates with. For each one, define what a correct response looks like rather than settling for a status code: the expected code, a required field in the response body, and a response time you are willing to accept. Run the check from more than one region, so a regional network fault can be told apart from a genuinely broken service. Alert on consecutive failures instead of a single one, or ordinary network noise will produce false alarms. Record response time as a trend and not only as pass or fail, because latency almost always degrades before an endpoint stops working.
